Zebra crossing installed on this Stoke-on-Trent road in safety crackdown

Families and dog walkers have welcomed a zebra crossing being installed on a busy road. Stoke-on-Trent City Council has painted the crossing in Little Chell Lane, Tunstall, 48 metres to the west of Sunnyside Avenue and near an entrance to Victoria Park.

Residents say the crossing will make it safer for pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren, and hope it will slow down speeding motorists.

Raja Wasim, aged 56, of Tunstall, said: “The crossing was needed. There is a school at the top of the road. The road is dangerous. It should make things safer for the children.”

Peter Turner, aged 75, of Bignall End, often walks his dog in Victoria Park. He said: “The crossing is needed. It will slow traffic down a bit. There are kids about and schools nearby so it is needed.”

Ana-Marie Currall, aged 48, who grew up on Sunnyside Avenue and visits her mother on a regular basis, added: “They do need some measures to slow down traffic. I welcome anything that makes it safer for people crossing the road. Maybe they need something to slow down the traffic and the double parking near St Margaret Ward School.”

Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and regeneration, said: “This project forms part of ongoing works to enhance safety on our city’s roads. The main purpose of the scheme is to link the two greenways in the vicinity and improve active travel.”
