Yellow warning issued as snow and ice to hit Aberdeenshire on New Year’s Day

Met Office forecasters have issued a new yellow weather warning for snow and ice in the north-east on New Year’s Day, with significant travel disruption expected.

Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire is currently under a yellow warning for rain and snow until the end of Hogmanay, with the new warning set to come into force at 4am on January 1.

It will remain in place until 9am on January 2, and covers large parts of Aberdeenshire including Alford, Banchory Inverurie, Huntly, Westhill and the Royal Deeside area.

The Met Office is warning of up to 3cm of snow at low levels, with as much as 10cm on higher ground, and has urged motorists to expect disruption.

The forecast states: “A band of rain will turn increasingly to snow at low levels as it moves south Wednesday morning, then clearing to snow showers in the afternoon, which will continue overnight and through to Thursday morning.

“1-3cm are likely at low levels with 5-10cm above 300m, leading to difficult driving conditions and some travel disruption.”

There is also a warning to those on foot of potential injuries on icy and untreated surfaces, with temperatures set to dip across the north-east.

Travel disruption hit Scotland in the run-up to Hogmanay, with rail lines closed due to flooding in the Highlands and roads blocked by the heavy rain.

A flood alert is currently in place across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, with SEPA warning of high levels on the Don and Dee rivers following more heavy rain.
