A woman has died following an incident in Galway that saw gardai rescue a body from the waters.
Gardai and emergency services were at the scene in Galway city on Tuesday morning following reports of a woman’s body unresponsive in the waters at Claddagh Quay.
Officers pulled her body from the waters and emergency services transferred her to University Hospital Galway, where she was later pronounced dead.
A post mortem is set to take place in due course which will determine the course of a gardai investigation.
A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told Galway Beo: “Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to an individual unresponsive in the water at Claddagh Quay in Galway yesterday morning, Tuesday 14th January 2025.
“The woman was transferred to University Hospital Galway, where she was later pronounced deceased.
“A post-mortem examination will take place in due course, the results of which will determine the course of the Garda investigation.”
Elsewhere this week, tributes have flowed for Galway man who died in Australia as he was remembered as ‘a lovely guy with a cheeky grin’.
Galway man John Furey, who was from the Doughiska area, died in Australia over two weeks ago, leaving his family back in Galway devastated.
John had been living in Coffs Harbour in Australia and sadly passed away on December 18 2024. This week his family will bury him in Ireland.
His requiem Mass will take place at the Good Shepherd Church in Doughiska and his ashes will be taken to Castlegar Cemetery.
The post on RIP.ie reads: “On the 18th of December 2024, John passed away in Australia. John will be sadly missed by his parents Nora and Declan and by his family and friends.
“John’s Requiem Mass will be held in the Good Shepherd Church, Doughiska (H91 DKF7), on Thursday, the 16th of January, at 11.00am, with burial of his ashes afterwards, in Castlegar Cemetery.”
Tributes have flowed for John and his family, with many of his friends from school sharing their sadness at the news, adding that he was ‘a lovely guy’.
