Some of you may have been watching your weather app all weekend waiting for it to snow – and given recent headlines, we can’t blame you.
After a week of Met Office warnings predicting snow and ice, Glasgow hasn’t seen much of the white stuff – despite widespread weather disruption across the UK, from flurries up north to school closures south of the border.
The city has however faced icy conditions underfoot and on roads, and there has been snowfall in the surrounding commuter belt, including Lanarkshire.
But will it actually snow in Glasgow any time soon? Here’s what the Met Office has to say, for this week and the long-range forecast ahead…
Are there more weather warnings this week?
There are yellow alerts in place today (Monday), Tuesday and Wednesday, with Scotland affected the first two days (January 6-7). This alert skirts around Glasgow but does take in the west coast – so take care if you’re travelling to and from Ayrshire. The warning, in place from 4pm today until midday tomorrow (Tues) reads: “Further wintry showers may lead to some travel disruption.
“Snow showers will continue for the rest of Monday and into Tuesday morning bringing further accumulations of 2 to 5cm in places, and 5 to 10 cm above 200 metres across northern Scotland. Showers will initially fall as rain or sleet at lower levels this evening, and across the Northern Isles at times throughout, leading to a risk of icy stretches.”
In short, Glasgow looks set to miss out on the worst of it again, but severe weather is expected elsewhere.

How long will the cold snap last?
It’s January, and cold weather isn’t exactly a surprise at this time of year – but if you’re feeling particularly chilly these last few days then we don’t blame you – temperatures are struggling to rise above 3°C in Glasgow and the Met Office says it feels more like -2 to 0 at best.
The next few days are predicted to be bright and sunny but very cold, with lows of -3 by Thursday (Jan 9). The forecast reads: “Cold weather will continue. Also staying mainly dry with plenty of sunshine, but widespread sharp frosts at nights. Northerly winds will become light.”
However, that looks set to change in time for the weekend – unfortunately bringing the rain with it. Saturday (Jan 11) sees the forecast rise to 5C and overcast, then 9C on Sunday (Jan 12) along with some dark grey clouds.
The long-range forecast reads: “Through the weekend and beyond, high pressure is likely to develop close to the UK, with generally settled conditions prevailing through mid-month. That said, there are likely to be some incursions of milder, windier, more unsettled conditions from the Atlantic at times, especially towards the north and west of the UK. These may be preceded by a spell of snow over higher ground and followed by some wintry showers.”
