Will Galway schools close tomorrow as list shows secondary and primary shutting

Several areas of the country were hit hard by snow overnight, particularly in the west and north-west, as the current icy spell continues.

Met Eireann has stated that daytime temperatures will struggle to rise above zero in many areas for the rest of the week, meaning little to no respite from the frost and ice or melt of lying snow.

Mercy College in Woodford confirmed to social media that they would close on Wednesday and would possibly close on Thursday: “Due to road conditions not improving and the temperature decreasing again tonight, we have made the decision to close Mercy College tomorrow (Wednesday). We will review the situation again Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning. Stay safe everyone!”

Holy Rosary College Mountbellew and Dunmore National School closed on Wednesday 8 January 2025. Cregmore National School opened at 10.30am, Scoil iosa, Oranmore, opened at 11am Merlin School opening at 11am, Ballyconneely National School opened at 11am.

A deluge of snow in the west and north-west on Monday and Tuesday nights has led to travel difficulties in many areas and the issue isn’t just a one off as Met Eireann has forecast several more days of below freezing conditions which will lead to icy roads.

The mercury in parts of the country could plunge to as low as -12 degrees making travelling conditions treacherous for pedestrians and road users.

The Low Temperature/Ice warning will come into effect at 8pm tonight and remain in place until Thursday, January 9 at 11am.

The Status Orange – Low Temperature/Ice warning is in place for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster and Connacht.
