Why you shouldn’t go to the tip today – warning issued as festive clean-up begins

People planning post-Christmas trips to recycling centres in Leicestershire have been issued a warning as 2024 comes to an end. Officials are urging residents to check opening times as the annual festive clear-out gets underway.

While most will be sitting down to watch TV and enjoy their leftover turkey sandwiches, the county’s recycling centres are preparing for a flood of Christmas waste. The council says the post-Boxing Day period marks the start of one of the year’s busiest spells at tips across Leicestershire.

Mountains of discarded wrapping paper, cardboard boxes and empty bottles will be making their way to sites across the county as residents begin their seasonal clear-outs. Staff at all sites are preparing for increased visitor numbers.

Councillor Blake Pain, Leicestershire County Council’ s cabinet lead member for the environment and the green agenda, said: “We’re approaching the busiest time of the year at our waste sites. While we are doing everything we possibly can to make sure that opening hours aren’t affected outside the usual seasonal closures, we’d encourage visitors to check our website and social media for updates and be patient if they do visit a site.”

The council operates recycling and household waste sites in Loughborough, Melton, Market Harborough and Hinckley.
