Plymouth Argyle have got ‘the ideal person’ to take the club forward in new head coach Miron Muslic, according to chief executive officer Andrew Parkinson.
Muslic’s previous work at Cercle Brugge, where he took over with them one off the bottom of the Belgian Pro League in the 2022/23 season and led them to a final position of eighth, was a particular reason why the Pilgrims’ board of directors chose him. The Austrian is now charged with a very similar task at Argyle, who are bottom of the Championship after going 11 games without a win.
The 42-year-old will take charge of Argyle for the first time tonight when they take on Oxford United at Home Park, in a game which was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 7 but was postponed due to safety concerns amid Storm Darragh.

Parkinson said: “We feel we have got the ideal person in Miron to take the club forward. As we went through the process he clearly had all the qualities we were looking for.
“He has got a great track record, he’s visionary, he knows the game inside out, very passionate, the style of football we wanted to play but outside of the technical qualities it’s his leadership; his ability to be able to lead teams but also his connection with supporters and with all our stakeholders. He was the stand-out candidate.”
Argyle carried out some initial interviews for the vacancy before getting down to a final shortlist, which Plymouth Live understands included former League One title-winning Pilgrims’ boss Steven Schumacher.
Parkinson said: “As a club we always go through a very thorough process and in this particular case we scouted worldwide really, and it’s ongoing. We all know we have always got to have succession planning – it can work one way or the other. We have had that very much in mind for a long time.
“We like to be ahead of everything, which is the right way of doing things, and the process is what are the qualities of the person that we need, both on the pitch but also off the pitch with regards to where you are at a particular situation.
“It was very much a board discussion but also involved some football people too, so getting a rounded view of everything. From the time of having the vacancy, in those 10 days we worked solidly, day in day out, 24/7, and that was essentially the process.
“We made sure we did initial interviews and then we went down to a final number. Very thorough. I think we covered every stone. As with everything you always learn from one process to another.
“I think it has got to be said as well, it is a challenge at Argyle. We know we haven’t got the biggest budget in the league. We know we are still looking to go further and we have got to do it in stages.
“We felt Miron’s experience of leading a club (Cercle Brugge) that was at the bottom of their league and progressing them through was ideal for the position we are in.”
Given the fact that director of football Neil Dewsnip left the club before the appointment process began, Parkinson was asked what ‘football people’ had been involved in the hiring process.
He replied: “We need to make Nance (long-serving first team coach Kevin Nancekivell) aware of the fact that this is who we are looking at. What does he think? He was very supportive of the decision. Essentially it’s internal people.”
