Where ‘hundreds’ of electric vehicle charge-points could be installed in Surrey over next two years

Surrey is set to receive “hundreds” of electric vehicle (EV) charging-points by 2027, according to Connected Kerb, the company set to facilitate the construction. The next phase of this “history-making project” began this month, and Surrey County Council is asking the public’s opinions on nearly 20 charge-points which are set to be constructed across the county in the next few months.

In March 2023, it was announced that Surrey County Council and Connected Kerb had agreed a contract which involved the proposed installation of hundreds of electric vehicle (EV) charge-points across the county by 2027.

The contract, which was the largest in the UK to date, includes up to £60million of investments for Connected Kerb to install public electric vehicle (EV) charge-points in Surrey, and be licensed to operate these charge-points for 15 years from installation

According to our council, as of October 2024, Surrey has over 200 EV charge-points sockets installed across its towns and villages. However, additional installations are set to begin later on in the first months of 2025, and according to Connected Kerb, this is the next phase in a “history-making project to install hundreds of charging points across the region by 2027.”

While there are already some proposed locations for charge-points as part of this, Connected Kerb and Surrey County Council would like the public’s help in deciding where these new locations will be. The council released a statement that included a survey inviting the public to ‘give us your views’ on the proposed locations, which allows respondents to explain if they are or are not in favour of specific charge-points.

In this statement, Surrey County Council explained that these locations have been proposed because either; they have been requested by members of the public, they are in ‘a community focal point’ or they are areas which have been identified as not having nearby access to EV charge-points.

At these locations, a mix of charge-points, depending on the location, will be installed to suit the needs of everyone. This will include: standard 7kW charge-points, slower 3-5kW lamp post charge-points, in locations where bollard charge-points are not feasible. And finally, rapid charge-points (50kW+) in areas of expected high-demand, it is likely this type of location will be based in car-parks.

“We know that emissions from transport are a significant proportion of our carbon footprint in Surrey, so supporting residents to switch to an electric car is essential to helping us achieve our aim of being a net zero county by 2050.” Said Marisa Heath, Cabinet Member for Environment at Surrey County Council when the contract was announced in 2023.

“Many residents don’t have access to driveways to charge EVs at home, so a comprehensive network of high-quality, reliable and accessible EV charge-points is essential to supporting the needs of our local communities.”

You can find the Surrey County Council survey on this matter here. Submissions for the survey will close on February 6 2025.
