What we know so far as flooding closes Killingworth Way roundabout after water main bursts

The Killingworth Way roundabout has flooded due to a burst water main, leading to the closure of the A189 and the A1056 in both directions in Newcastle.

Both Northumbrian Water and Northumbria Police have been on the scene since the early hours, as repairs continue.

Police are asking motorists to find alternative routes when possible, and aim to have the roads reopened within 24 hours.

Northumbrian Water said: “Our teams are currently carrying out repairs on a burst water main on Sandy Lane(A1056), North Gosforth.

“The A189 has been closed in all directions at the roundabout/junction of Killingworth Way and Sandy Lane Roundabout and police are asking motorists to use alternative routes where possible.

“The burst was reported in the early hours and crews have worked through the night to isolate and begin the repair, which includes rezoning the water network so there is minimal impact to our customers’ supply.

“We will be working hard throughout the day with our partners to clear the standing water from the highway and we are hoping the main will be fixed and the road will be reopened within the next 24 hours.

“We’d like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while our teams work as quickly as they can to carry out the repair.”

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 1am today (Thursday) we were made aware of a burst water pipe on Killingworth Way in North Tyneside. Engineers are at the scene.

“The A189 is currently closed in all directions at the junction of Killingworth Way and Sandy Lane Roundabout. Motorists should use alternative routes where possible.”
