Wayne Rooney set for immediate return to work with ‘big-money deal’ on table

Wayne Rooney is set to receive significant offers to switch careers following his departure from Plymouth, according to reports.

The former Derby County boss left his role at Home Park this Tuesday after a difficult six-month spell managing the Championship team. During his tenure, Rooney secured only four wins and the team is currently languishing at the bottom of the table.

Despite a track record that includes parting ways with four teams in just two-and-a-half years – Derby, DC United, Birmingham City and now Plymouth – Rooney’s insight into football remains in high demand, particularly from TV networks eager for his punditry skills.

The Sun cites an insider saying: “Wayne is regarded as one of the best pundits in the business. He’s very, very knowledgeable about the game. And even though he’s actually quite a shy person, he really feels at home in a TV studio.”

Further, they mentioned: “It’s been a rubbish end to 2024 for Wayne, but he’s not going to be out of work for long. He’ll be offered punditry work straight away and there’s interest from Sky in a potential long-term deal to tie him down as a pundit.”

It is believed Rooney still holds managerial aspirations, yet like Gary Neville before him, he may find a more rewarding and financially beneficial career as a broadcaster rather than on the sidelines managing in the dugout.

Rooney has opened up about his departure from Plymouth, recognising the key figures he worked with at the club and expressing his lasting fondness for the team. In his heartfelt message, Rooney stated: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with.

“Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future. To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever.

“I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, help and support. Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
