Water restored to 2,000 homes in Cork city after major mains burst

Uisce Éireann crews have repaired a burst water main in the Douglas area after Cork city – after a burst yesterday left 2,000 homes without water.

Traffic diversions were put in place along the South Douglas Road as crews worked from yesterday afternoon until early this morning to repair the damage. Uisce Éireann said that customers affected by the unplanned outage should see their supplies restored over the rest of today.

Water Operations Lead for Uisce Éireann, James Goulding said: “In order to address the significant burst, it was necessary to turn off the water in some areas while crews completed the necessary works. We do understand this was an inconvenience to our customers and we sincerely thank our customers for their patience. Works have successfully been completed and water is now returning to our customers.

“We continue to advise customers not to drink discoloured water and to contact us directly with any reports of discolouration to help us manage the response in real time and to prioritise reactive works. On receipt of such calls, we then undertake flushing in the affected region.”

Yesterday Uisce Éireann confirmed: ““We understand the inconvenience when a burst of this nature occurs, and we are working to repair the burst as quickly as possible.”

The company added that the unplanned outage may cause discolouration for a period of time but if it persists, he advised customers to phone the Uisce Éireann helpline on 1800 278 278.

Uisce Éireann has had a busy couple of weeks in Cork – with many pipes and mains damaged as a result of the big freeze that covered much of the Rebel County in ice and snow.

Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours. To register as a vulnerable customer or as an alternative contact, you can visit the company’s Vulnerable Customers page.
