A Leicestershire tourist attraction has issued a stark warning after children were found playing on a frozen canal. Last week’s freezing conditions saw part of the Ashby Canal freeze over, but not all kept clear of the ice.
Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park, near Ashby, issued the warning to parents after it had reports of children playing on a stretch of the frozen canal. It said such an act was highly “dangerous”.
In a statement on Facebook, Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park, said: “Please help!!! Can you ensure your young people know about the dangers of frozen water. There is no way of knowing how thick ice is. We have had reports of children playing on the frozen canal at Moira over the last few days.”

The tourist attraction called on people to report the actions of those playing dangerously on the river. It said: “This is so dangerous and we do not want children hurt in avoidable accidents. Please work with us to keep everyone safe, thank you!”
Moira Furnace’s post gained many comments online, with several calling out children playing on the river. One said: “I cannot believe people do not warn their children about playing on water which are thick or thin with ice, it is very dangerous.”
The current forecast for Leicestershire suggests temperatures could drop down to 0C again on Saturday night (January 18) but the BBC’s long-term forecast, which goes up to Tuesday, January 28, suggests no upcoming sub-zero weather like there was recently.
