Walker rescued from Hadrian’s Wall after slipping and injuring their lower leg

A walker was rescued from Hadrian’s Wall after slipping and injuring their lower leg.

The Northumberland National Park Rescue Team rescuers were called out following a 999 call from the walker’s partner on December 28, just after 1.30pm. A total of 22 crew members were involved in the rescue, which took three hours and 40 minutes and the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) also assisted with the rescue.

A duty controller for Northumberland National Park Rescue Team picked up the call and sent out a PhoneFind to pinpoint the exact location of the casualty. Within a few minutes two of the team’s emergency vehicles were dispatched on the road with both vehicles running on blue lights to get there as swiftly as possible.

A community paramedic from NEAS coordinated with the mountain rescue team. Although the walker was close to Cawfields car park, the casualty’s condition and location on steep ground required a stretcher carry to the ambulance.

In a post on Facebook, a spokesperson for the team said: “On arrival, one of our volunteers used a group shelter to keep the casualty warm and dry in the cold and wet conditions, whilst another assisted the Paramedic. Once more team members arrived on scene, we carried the casualty off the hillside using our Titan Stretcher and handed them over to the awaiting ambulance.

“This was another smooth Christmas rescue from one of our hot spot incident locations, thanks to the combined efforts of the volunteers from ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team as well as the crews from the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

“A big thank you to everyone involved, and we wish the casualty a speedy recovery. Remember, if you’re heading out in the hills this festive season, be prepared, check the weather forecast and if you need help, dial 999, ask for Police and then request Mountain Rescue.”
