Engineers were called out last night to a 20ft jet of water in a North East street. Northumbrian Water said several fire hydrants in the Quarrington Hill area had been ‘misused’.
A dramatic video shared on social media shows a powerful jet spraying into the street late at around 9pm. With temperatures falling and snow on the way several people said the water could freeze creating treacherous conditions for drivers as well as pedestrians.
Writing on Facebook, one person said it was going to make ‘an ice rink’ while another said: “This frozen path is a disaster waiting to happen.”
Northumbrian Water said it believed the hydrants used by the fire service may have been activated deliberately.
A spokesperson said: “We were made aware of an issue in Quarrington Hill on Saturday evening where several fire hydrants had been misused, potentially maliciously, causing water to be discharged.
“The issue was quickly attended to by our engineers, who resolved the problem.
“Due to the snowy weather and low temperatures we are currently experiencing, there is a chance of additional ice in the area than what may otherwise be expected.
“We therefore urge residents to take great care in the affected areas, particularly when driving.”
Durham Constabulary has been contacted for further information.
