University of Gloucestershire student selected from hundreds to embark on leadership program

A University of Gloucestershire student has won a place on a national programme aimed at promoting and developing future leaders across nursing, midwifery and allied health professions.

Sharon Shuttleworth, who is studying BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, was selected from nearly 300 applicants to join the Student Leadership Programme (SLP) co-funded by the Council of Deans of Health and Burdett Trust for Nursing.

The programme provides successful applicants with essential leadership skills to make a positive difference across the health sector, including on how to build an effective team, enhance their knowledge and experience, and build strong networks and relationships.

The programme features a coaching scheme giving access to leaders, innovators and creators in their own respective disciplines within the healthcare care sector, officially launching with a two-day conference including workshops, lectures and seminars.

Sharon, among a cohort of 60 students selected for the programme from across the UK, said: “I travelled to Manchester for the programme’s launch conference with a mix of excitement and nerves. I felt so proud to step out of my comfort zone and represent both University of Gloucestershire and my future profession in physiotherapy.

“We engaged in leadership skills workshops, including a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style entrepreneurial challenge, and heard from inspiring senior healthcare leaders who shared the significant impacts they are making on the NHS at local national and international levels.

“It was a motivating two days, through which I gained a network of like-minded student contacts, all dedicated to pushing boundaries and achieving success.

“I am really looking forward to embracing the experiences that will present themselves to me during the programme.”

Adrian Bevan, Academic Course Leader for BSc Physiotherapy, said: “Sharon joined our programme after working in the local NHS for a number of years, including as a physiotherapy assistant. She developed a strong passion for helping others, which prompted a desire to train to become a physiotherapist.

“Sharon has performed well in all aspects of our Physiotherapy programme and displayed a strong commitment to her chosen career path.

“She displays excellent communication skills, working well with individuals and in team situations, as well as bringing a wealth of skills essential to being a healthcare practitioner and striving to ensure the best service experience for patients under her care.

“The Student Leadership Programme is an excellent vehicle for successful applicants to develop the leadership skills they will need in practice settings and I have no doubt that Sharon will apply the ideas and skills she gains to positive effect.”
