Two busy Cork cafes to close after team admit ‘rising costs are making it impossible’

It’s not for the lack of admirers, good food and coffee or a hard-working team. In fact, the crew behind the Kabin Cafes in Ballincollig and Ballinhassig could point to an already successful catering operation that made it make a lot of sense to open up their stylish outlets.

And the customers did come, with owner Tadgh Long of TLC Catering in Ballinhassig capitalising on his experience and track record to create a quality offering at both locations.

However, less than a year after opening their second cafe in Ballincolling, which was enthusiastically welcomed by locals in the thriving town, the Kabin crew have had to throw in the towel, beaten by the rising costs and falling spending power caused by the commbination of inflation and an ongoing cost of living squeeze.

Taking to instagram, Tadgh and his team have had to let their loyal customers know that they will serve their last cups of coffee and sweet treats in both Ballincollig (Westpoint Biz Park) and Ballinhassig ‘imminently’.

There is some good news – the Kabin Catering Co./TLC Catering company will continue to operate in Ballinhassig and will be ready for a busy spring and summer of catering for celebrations and corporate events and customers.

The management team thanked all who had supported their cafe ventures but said; “The unforseen rising costs of doing business had made it impossible for both premises to operate successfully”.

The Kabin Cafe in Ballincollig

They said they wanted to thank their hard-working team and all of the customers who had supported both cafes. The Ballinshassig outlet will close on Sunday, followed by the Ballincolling cafe on the following Sunday, the 26th.

They also assured anybody who got Kabin Cafe vouchers for Christmas that they will be honoured and all suppliers will continue to be paid as normal as the Kabin Catering Co remains in business.

These cafes are just the latest in Cork to suffer in what are very tough times for the hospitality sector – and they underline the need for Leesiders to support locally owned and independent Cork businesses wherever possible.

Cork has the most varied and vital independent coffee and cafe scenes in Ireland – without the huge presence of big name chains that you find in most other European cities. But it seems the only way to preserve this independence and choice is to choose Cork, back Cork.
