Tributes have paid to a “remarkable” woman who has been described as being “a strong advocate for the city and its residents.” Councillor Sue Burke died on Thursday, January 2, surrounded by her family.
Sue began her public service in May 2012 when she was elected to the City of Lincoln Council for the Minster ward from May 2012 to May 2016, when she was then elected to represent her home ward of Park. She was Lincoln’s 813th Mayor, and served two terms from 2019 to 2021, the first person to do so since the First World War. Sue served a number of different civic roles during her time as a councillor.
She was also the portfolio holder for reducing inequality and was a champion for mental health and the voluntary sector by ensuring vital services were supported.
Councillor Naomi Tweddle, leader of the City of Lincoln Council, stated: “Our thoughts go out to Sue’s husband Chris and her family during this difficult time. Sue was a huge asset to the Labour group.
“Her belief in social justice made her the perfect choice for her role as Portfolio Holder for Reducing Inequality. She was much-loved by all, and her dedication and compassion will be missed by the party, the community, and everyone who knew her.
“Taken far too soon, Sue leaves a massive hole in our party and in our hearts.” Angela Andrews, chief executive and town clerk at the council, added: “Councillor Sue Burke’s life was one of purpose and profound impact and she will be missed greatly by her family, friends and colleagues at the city council.
“Our thoughts are with her family and friends as we mourn her loss and honour her remarkable contributions.” The Lincoln Labour Party has also paid tribute to Councillor Burke, and say that she made Lincoln “a better place.”
A post shared by the group to Facebook reads: “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Councillor Sue Burke. Sue was a dedicated and compassionate leader who served as Mayor of Lincoln, a Councillor for Park and Minster Ward, and Portfolio Holder for Reducing Inequality.
