A provisional trial date has been set for a teenager who has been charged with the murder of a young man in Ilkeston . The 17-year-old was told he will face trial at Derby Crown Court on July 28 after he was charged earlier this week with murdering Noah Smedley.
The 18-year-old victim suffered a stab wound and died in the Heanor Road area of the town at around 9pm on Saturday, December 28. The accused, who is from the Ilkeston area and cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, appeared at Derby Crown Court on Friday Wednesday, January 3. Dressed in a prison-issued grey tracksuit, he was not asked to enter any plea and was remanded to a young offender’s institution. Lucky Thandi, defending, did not apply for bail on her client’s behalf.
Judge Shaun Smith KC said the teen will next appear on March 21 when he will be expected to enter his plea to the charge. Reporting restrictions were imposed by the magistrate not to name him until he turns 18 or until removed by the crown court judge. Following his death, several friends shared Derbyshire Police’s appeals for information on the stabbing along with their own tributes to Noah.
One friend wrote on Facebook: “Fly high – gone way too soon. Loved and missed by everyone. My heart goes out to your family. RIP Noah Smedley.”
Another wrote: “Rest in peace Noah Smedley. Gone too soon, you’ll be missed by everyone, funniest person I knew.” Another friend added: “Noah Smedley RIP. Rest easy mate, will be missed.”
