A number of Stoke-on-Trent schools are shut due today – due to the ‘treacherous’ weather. A yellow weather warning for ice remains in place until midday on Wednesday, January 8.
It follows the latest snowfall last night and freezing temperatures this morning.
Up to 10 Stoke-on-Trent schools are currently closed for the day. Two of them – Ormiston Horizon Academy, in Chell, and Thistley Hough Academy, in Penkhull – are secondary schools.
Thistley Hough Academy says the two hills surrounding the Thistley Hough school are ‘too treacherous’.
A school spokesman said: “The school is closed today. The side roads around Thistley and the two hills – Penkhull New Road and Honeywall – are too treacherous for children to walk up.”
Ormiston Horizon Academy has remained closed for a second successive day following a ‘detailed risk assessment’.
A school spokesman said: “Unfortunately, we have made the really difficult decision to close the academy today. After the snow yesterday and the below-freezing temperatures last night, our site is not safe to access by foot or by car. We realise this is a localised issue, as main roads seem to be manageable. We feel that opening the academy today would put students, parents and staff at risk. You have my full assurances that our site team are doing everything in their power to ensure that the site is safe and secured for tomorrow.”
