The Met Office has predicted a cold, wet night for Merseyside, with temperatures of 2C
Flooding at the junction of Blackbrook Road and West End Road, Haydock, St Helens, January 1 2025
Flood alerts have been issued for three Merseyside rivers as heavy rain batters the region. The River Alt in Formby and Huyton, the River Sankey in St Helens and Warrington, and River Ditton in Huyton-with-Roby and Widnes are all at risk of bursting their banks as downpours are expected to continue all night and well into tomorrow.
According to the Environment Agency, the River Alt and other watercourses from Huyton to Hightown – including, Kirkby, Fazakerley, Maghull, Formby, Aughton, Sefton and Lunt – are at risk due to melting snow and heavy rainfall.
Water levels in the River Ditton are also rising due to rainfall, with flooding forecast to affect low lying land and roads around Ditton, Logwood Mill, Fox’s Bank, Dog Clog, Stewards, and Netherley Brooks and the surrounding areas. People have been warned to avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses, and to not attempt to walk or drive through floodwater.
Finally, flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Sankey, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around the Black, Barkers, Windle and Whittle Brooks. This includes Blackbrook Road and West End Road in Haydock, where properties were submerged in 6ft of water after heavy rainfall on New Year’s Day.
The Met Office has predicted a cold, wet night for Merseyside, with temperatures of 2C. Rain is predicted to continue for most of the day tomorrow, with a 90% chance of precipitation throughout the morning, gradually decreasing to 40% overnight.
