Three casualties in Royal Stoke after eight-vehicle M6 pile-up

At least eight vehicles have been involved in an M6 pile-up – leaving three casualties in Stoke-on-Trent’s main hospital. Emergency services closed the M6 northbound – between junction 15 for Stoke-on-Trent South and junction 16 for Stoke-on-Trent North – at the height of the incident.

The crash happened at 2.50pm this afternoon. Now ‘severe delays’ remain into the evening rush-hour.

Traffic monitoring system Inrix states: “There are severe delays due to an earlier accident on the M6 northbound. There is congestion to before junction 15 and on the opposite side back to just after junction 16 due to onlookers. Routes through Stoke-on-Trent are also heavily congested as drivers seek alternative routes.”

National Highways was warning of two-hour delays and eight miles of queues during the evening rush-hour.

A National Highways spokesman said: “The earlier collision has been cleared and all lanes are open. However there are residual delays of two hours and eight miles of congestion which are not being helped by several breakdowns.”

Vehicles involved in the collision include a Nissan panel van, a Vauxhall panel van, a Vauxhall Corsa, a Skoda Fabia, a Kia EV6, a Toyota Yaris, a Citroen Berlingo and a Ford Transit van.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “We were called to the M6 northbound this afternoon following reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles. All the vehicles have now been cleared from the scene. Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service took three people to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing at this time.”

Two ambulances and a paramedics officer went to the scene.

An ambulance service spokesman added: “We were called to reports of a multi-vehicle road traffic collision.”
