Some Essex villages are so green and beautiful, that you would hardly believe that they are located in one of the most highly populated counties. One such village is so naturally green, that despite being tiny it has three different greens and a meadow- and it has other brilliant things about it too!
Helions Bumpstead is a Parish in the very north-west corner of the Braintree district. The Parish borders Suffolk (St Edmundsbury District) as well as the Uttlesford District.
Helions Bumpstead has “the greens”; Pale Green, Wiggens Green, and Drapers Green, which make for a naturally beautiful village. There is also a meadow with a pond in the centre of the village.

It is a tight-knit, happy community, and every year Helions Bumpstead has its own Summer Fête, including a dog show and evening party, and Christmas Bazaar. A harvest supper is also organised annually to raise funds for the up-keep of St. Andrew’s church.
While the tiny village is lacking a lot of more modern amenities, it does have some great features. The main defining features of the village are the village post office, the village hall, the Three Horseshoes Public House and St Andrew’s Church.
The village of Helions Bumpstead is a very quaint place to live, and is so tiny that it doesn’t have a supermarket or a doctor’s office. You definitely have no excuse to get lost here, either – as it only has four roads!
Despite being rather isolated, the village’s residents live a lovely lifestyle. Homes here are rather expensive, though – house prices in Helions Bumpstead have an overall average of £615,000 over the last year, nearly £200k above the Essex average.
The one main issue with the village is how on earth to pronounce its name. If you’re from Helions Bumpstead, it must be a pain to spell over the phone – but this small village is indeed pronounced as He-lee-ons Bump-Sted. It has such a unique name that you’d be forgiven if you think that its a made up village.
