A Teesside fish and chip shop has been named as one of the best in the country.
Joplins scooped the title for the ‘Best of the North’ in the first ever English Chippy Awards. The High Street, Great Ayton, business was followed by Downey’s Fish & Chips, in Seaham, which was ‘Highly Commended’.
Another North-east eatery also featured in the list of winners. Cod & Lobster was ‘Highly Commended’ in the ‘Seafood Specialists of the Year’ category. The Staithes, Saltburn, eatery was pipped to the post by Sea Beats in Weymouth. And The Magpie Cafe, in Whitby, was also voted as ‘Cafe of the Year’ at the awards.
The English Chippy Awards celebrates the “rich heritage and excellence in the art of crafting delectable fish and chips”. A spokesperson said: “From the bustling cities to the serene coastal towns, English chippies hold a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
“The competition not only showcases culinary expertise but also highlights the dedication and passion of the English chippy community.”
