The spa town on Peak District border known as the ‘Bath of the north’

Buxton in Derbyshire has consistently been named as one of the best places to live, not just once or twice, but repeatedly. This recognition has boosted local pride, attracted new residents and potentially increased property values.

The town has received accolades from The Times, The Guardian and numerous other publications, websites and blogs. Lifestyle journalist Hero Brown of Muddy Stilettos elaborated on why this town, often referred to as the “Bath of the north”, is so special.

She said: “Known as the ‘Bath of the north’, it’s the highest spa town in the UK with water that naturally flows at a glorious 28C.”

“Although the Romans first discovered this, it was really the Georgians that made Buxton famous – bringing with them some of the most iconic architecture in Derbyshire.”

“From the Crescent to the Opera House to the Devonshire Dome, it really is picture perfect.”, reports the Express.

In addition to being the highest spa town in the UK, Buxton is also England’s highest market town, situated approximately 1,000 feet (300m) above sea level. The beautiful town is located near Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south, on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

Despite its many attractions, house prices in Buxton are surprisingly lower than the national average. In 2023, the overall average property price in Buxton was £261,918, compared to the UK average of £290,000 in July of that year.

Buxton is not only a great place to live but also a fantastic destination for visitors, boasting a variety of unique bars and restaurants. A top-rated dining spot on TripAdvisor is the Bayleaf Lounge Restaurant, a popular curry house.

The town also hosts renowned annual events such as the Buxton Festival, an opera and arts event founded in 1979 that takes place every July at the Opera House and other local venues.

Alongside this runs the Buxton Festival Fringe, known as a precursor to the legendary Edinburgh Fringe, featuring drama, music, dance, comedy, poetry, art exhibitions and more. However, according to TripAdvisor, the must-visit attraction in the town is Poole’s Cavern and Buxton Country Park.

This natural cavern in the Peak District is described as the most spectacular, with unique crystal formations including the region’s longest stalactite formation. Visitors have highly praised the attraction, with one TripAdvisor user exclaiming: “What a spectacular set of caves.”

Another added: “Wow. Absolutely breathtaking.”
