A popular 16th century pub and restaurant has added some massive meals to its menu to potentially reward customers with the biggest appetites. The George IV Country Inn in Cwmtwrch in the Swansea Valley, popular for its carvery, grill and pub food, has added a new ‘challenge’ section to its menu, similar to what you’d see from the likes of Adam Moran’s BeardMeatsFood or Adam Richman in Man vs Food.
On the menu is the mega burger challenge, which consists of two 24 oz bacon burgers, chips, garlic bread, onion rings and salad, which costs £40, but if you finish inside one hour, you get the meal free and £40 cash. For the latest restaurant reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here.
There’s also the mixed grill challenge, which consists of a rump steak, gammon, chicken breast, four sausages, onion rings, two eggs, garlic bread, mushrooms, tomatoes, peppercorn sauce, and one burger, which costs £50 cash, but if you finish in an hour, you get the meal free and £50 cash.
Finally, there’s the 62 oz steak challenge, which consists of steak, mushrooms, chips, salad, garlic bread, tomatoes and onion rings. It costs £70, but if you finish in an hour, you get the food for free and £50 cash.

Shaun Griffiths is the owner of The George. Explaining how the idea came about, he said: “The idea basically came about through watching YouTube and following a few people like BeardMeatsFood, and Leah Shutkever, and we thought we could give it a go ourselves. Our menu has lots of grills, steaks, tomahawks, things like that. It’s not a big part of the business, but since we started, it has certainly got us a lot of exposure when we do them. It’s not to make money, because quite often, what we charge for the challenge is what it costs to put the food on the plate.
“We’ve had around 35 people who have tried it, and it has only actually been beaten twice, one of those being Morgan Morse, an Ospreys player. The most popular challenges we tend to find are either the mixed grill or the steak ones. They all weigh in at around 3kg of food. We want to make it fair for everybody, so we have a scales, and they all go out with the exact same weight on, no matter which one you choose to do.
“Most people can eat two, to 2.2 kilos, and they can get there quite fast, but it’s the last couple of grams it is. We had one guy who had literally three spoonful’s of food left on his plate, but he just couldn’t do it. People get an hour to do it, but it’s never the time which is the problem, people just fill up. The fastest that it’s been done with us so far is 38 minutes, which was pretty good to be fair. Whenever someone takes on the challenge, everyone who is in gets a bit excited and sort of pushes them on a little bit.”
All challenges must be pre-booked 24 hours in advance and paid for before attempting it.
