The Leicestershire school among the top 10 in East Midlands Fairer Schools Index

A Leicestershire school has been ranked among the top 10 in East Midlands. The Fairer Schools index is said to represent a more accurate insight into the places where teachers are truly making a difference to children’s lives in class.

The new list reveals the top schools across the entire East Midlands, with the Market Bosworth School coming in at number 10. The index, which has been developed by the University of Bristol, adjusts for variables including pupil demographics, ethnicity, and deprivation.

The results show the real difference that the best schools make rather than pretending every school has an identical intake with the same socio-economic status and background. Overall, the Market Bosworth School comes in at 169th nationally according to the index.

The index’s researchers have measured every school in the country against a series of additional performance metrics to improve on official DfE league tables. It is also called the Fairer Schools index as it removes some of the built-in bias against secondary schools teaching children from deprived areas.

The results show the schools where teachers are beating the odds to make the greatest positive impact on pupils up to the age of 16. The study highlights the dozens of schools which have climbed hundreds of places up the rankings when additional factors such as pupil demographics are taken into account.

For the Market Bosworth School, it is the only Leicestershire school to make the regional top 10. It is not their only accolade of recent times though as it was listed as one of county’s best performing secondary schools in December. That listing also saw the school come third in all three of Leicestershire’s top 20 schools for Grade 5 or above in English and Maths, top 20 schools for Attainment 8 scores and top schools for Progress 8 scores.

Stuart Wilson, Market Bosworth School Principal, said: “It is fantastic that The Market Bosworth School has been named as one of the top schools in the region. We are proud that the hard work and commitment of our students and staff has been recognised by the Fairer Schools Index. All of us at the school look forward to continuing our mission of helping all children to achieve their best both academically and pastorally.”

The index was created amid growing concerns that the Government’s method of evaluating secondary school performance, known as the Progress 8 measure, had failed to take into account factors including the number of children from poorer backgrounds at each school. Critics say doing this risks hiding systemic inequalities and providing potentially misleading conclusions about school performance.
