Four Welsh fish and chip shops have been named among the best in the whole of the UK in a prestigious list published every year by a fish and chip magazine. Fry Magazine has just announced their top 50 Best Fish and Chip Takeaways in Britain for the third consecutive year.
For 2025, four Welsh locations have made the cut, which are listed below. The 2025 awards were determined following months of mystery dining, with Fry’s judges visiting establishments unannounced. In addition to assessing food quality, points were awarded for cleanliness, staff expertise, value for money, ease of ordering, and social media presence.
Each chippy had the chance to score 100 points, and the magazine said that the standard was once again extremely high. Only those with top-notch scores receive recognition. The cut-off for this year stood at 96% and higher, with several shops scoring a flawless 100%.
The Welsh fish and chip shops named in the top 50 for 2025 are:
Farnham’s at Fontygary, Rhoose, Vale Of Glamorgan
This place has a Google rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on 308 reviews. One of those reads: “I rarely leave a review but we were so impressed with the quality of the fish and chips I had to write something! Nice crispy batter and excellent quality fish. Supported with mushy peas and the Irish curry sauce. We were a family of six and we were totally satisfied with a delicious take away meal. Would 100% recommend!”
Fintans Fish & Chip Co. Llanishen, Cardiff
Fintans has a rating of 3.9 out of 5 on Facebook, with one satisfied customer posting: “Best fish and chips ever. I have the gluten free fish and chips and curry sauce and it is so good.”
Hiks, Brynhyfryd, Swansea
Hiks has a Tripadvisor rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on 193 reviews. One customer wrote: “Called in on the hop at about 1.15pm on a Friday. Restaurant was busy but had I just missed lunch. We both had a large cup of tea and a small fish and chips each . Great proper made cup of tea. I don’t know what you call a small portion but this was more than enough – freshly fried fish, home made chips and a salad garnish. Everything was served red hot and cooked to perfection. All reasonably priced, highly recommended.”
Reece Head, competition organiser at Fry Magazine, said: “Congratulations to this year’s award winners! Another year has passed and, once again, these shops have shown resilience, adapting to today’s challenges with remarkable dedication. At a time when inflationary pressures are being felt, these businesses continue to stay positive and prioritise their customers, maintain exceptional standards, and find innovative ways to keep fish and chips affordable.
“Starting the year as award winners is a fantastic way for fish and chip shops to kick off 2025, setting the tone for a successful year ahead. Whether served in a restaurant, a takeaway, or from a mobile unit, the Fry Awards prove that quality fish and chips can be enjoyed anywhere.”

Ainsworth’s has a Tripadvisor rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on 787 reviews. One of those reviewers wrote: “Gorgeous mushy peas (I bought two pots to take back home, that’s how much I liked them!), generous cod portion, and everything super clean. There is also a wee counter where customers can eat; it was raining buckets, so I had dinner in there. Staff members are lovely and it is located very close to the bus station so I could have dinner and come back to my place in Bangor rather quickly. Will definitely return to this Caernarfon chippy often.”
