A major mains burst has hit water supplies across vast parts of Conwy county – affecting around 40,000 homes and hundreds of businesses. The incident started yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) at the Bryn Cowlyd Water Treatment Works, Dolgarrog.
Affected areas include the Conwy Valley, Conwy town, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Llanrwst, and Llanfairfechan. It has also impacted businesses across the county with some attractions closing and cafes and restaurants shutting early.
This could cost businesses thousands of pounds and also mean residents having to fork out on bottled water.
Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water say the repair is taking “longer than planned” to resolve due to the complex challenges posed. They say even once the repair is carried out it could be 48 hours before some properties get water supplies back.
The only positive news for those affected is that there is compensation offered.
What will households receive:
According to Dwr Cymru homeowners get £30 if they have not restored water supplies 12 hours after first knowing of the problem. For this incident that start point will be around 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.
They then offer a further £30 for every further 12 hours that supplies are affected. As stated earlier the repair has not yet been carried out due to the complex nature of the burst. More on that here.
It could be 48 hours after that when some homes get water supplies back. If the repair is completed tomorrow morning then it could be Sunday morning before some get water in their home, although others could get it sooner.
That could be 84 hours and in terms of compensation that could be up £210 for being without water.
What will businesses receive:
For business it is £75 for the first 12 hours and the same for every further 12 hours after that. This could mean compensation of over £500.
When will the money be paid:
Customers should receive their compensation within 20 working days.
