The Bristol roadwork schemes starting this week that you should know about

As January approaches the half-way mark, several sets of roadworks will begin this week as long projects and short disruptions take place. Across Bristol and the outskirts of the city in South Gloucestershire, schemes will take place across the next few days to repair roads or let necessary work take place.

Some of these roadworks are only estimated to take a few days to complete, whilst others form part of year-long schemes which will go very much noticed. Each set of roadworks will take place at different times, such as at night, whilst longer projects are often phased to minimise disruption.

We have rounded up some of the roadworks projects that will begin this week across the region.

Hengrove Way will face more night closures as the long-running roadworks scheme continues. Bristol’s ring road will close from the Hengrove Way roundabout to its junction with the A37 Wells Road.

The closure will take effect at night according to One.Network, which says that the closures will be in force from 7pm to 6am. It will start tonight and last until Thursday morning. The closures will affect traffic in both directions.

The long-running scheme aims to improve the A4174 in south Bristol for cyclists and pedestrians around the Bamfield junction. The scheme is expected to end later this year.

Resurfacing works in Emersons Green

Westbourne Road, in Emersons Green, will close at night this week for resurfacing works to take place. The road will close between the junctions of Boscombe Crescent (near Westerleigh Road) and Lulworth Crescent (the west-most junction).

The work will take place at night between 7pm and 6am, starting tonight and running until the morning of Saturday, January 18. A diversion will be in place using Westbourne Road (west of the closure) and Boscombe Crescent.

Drainage features to be installed at road in Mangotsfield

Mangotsfield Road will close from today for nearly two weeks as new “drainage features” will be installed at a road crossing. The road, which is part of the B4465, will close between Charnhill Drive and Rodway Hill Road.

The road will reopen once the roadworks are completed, which is scheduled to be on Friday, January 24. A diversion will be in place whilst the work is undertaken by South Gloucestershire Council.

One.Network said: “Drainage works consist of new drainage pipe, a new drainage system installation or the repair of existing drainage systems.”

Multiple projects to affect A4 Portway over coming year

The Portway will be subject to multiple different roadwork projects over the coming months, starting this week. The A4 will close between Park Road, Shirehampton, and Sylvan Way, Sea Mills, as trees infected with ash dieback are felled.

The closure will be in force from 9pm to 5.30am every night until Friday, January 17. It is the first of three phases of the scheme.

Today also sees the start of a 13-month project which will realign the kerb along the A4 in northwest Bristol. Alongside the kerb works, a ground penetration radar survey will take place, which maps out what is underneath the surface.

According to One.Network, the project will run until February 2026. The entirety of the Portway from the B4054 roundabout to Hotwells will be affected. During these works, a lane will be closed. It is unclear whether these works will be phased.

Newfoundland Way

A key route within the city centre will be subject to a lane closure either side of the carriageway. Bond Street heading eastbound will have a lane closed for “jetting and surveying for gullies and manholes”. The lane closure will extend to Newfoundland Circus on the eastbound side.

On the westbound carriageway, the lane closure will be in force from the Riverside Youth Project to Newfoundland Circus. The junction of Bond Street South will also have a lane closed outside of Cabot Circus.

The closures will start tonight from 8pm and last until 11.59pm on Wednesday according to One.Network.
