Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes the planning of our next travel adventures. But you don’t need to venture far to uncover a stunning – yet underappreciated – coastal town.
Nestled on Kent’s eastern coastline, Deal is a historic gem offering breathtaking views of the English Channel, just an hour’s train ride from London. On clear, sunny days, France can be spotted from Deal’s golden beaches.
The town itself is a visual delight, with its pastel-coloured cottages, elegant Georgian houses, and imposing Tudor castle perched on a hill overlooking the sea. The Guardian recently dubbed Deal as Kent’s “most charming” town, while Restless hailed it as the UK’s ‘beautiful seaside town’, describing it as a “quirky yet underrated town [which] boasts gorgeous sea views year-round.”
CNN Traveler, meanwhile, has also recognised Deal as England’s “best kept beach secret”, stating: “The unsung seaside town has long been a destination for those in the know.”

So what is there to do in Deal?
Deal Castle, the town’s most iconic landmark, was initially constructed by King Henry III in 1540 as a defence against France and the Holy Roman Empire, reports the Express. Its rich history includes pivotal roles in England’s civil wars in the 17th century and as a coastal guard against German forces during World War Two.
Visitors can ascend the battlements, enjoy a picnic on the grounds, and take in the incredible Channel views from this seaside fortress. One of the most picturesque spots in Deal is undoubtedly Deal Castle Beach and its 300-metre promenade, one of only two in Kent.
The beach is famed for its vibrant fishing boats, known as the Deal cutters, and there’s a plethora of activities to enjoy nearby such as crazy golf, paddling, and sailing. Plus, there’s a variety of shops and eateries close by.
Art enthusiasts will be drawn to Deal, with numerous art galleries and museums to explore. The Aster Theatre is also worth a visit, hosting fun performances and cultural festivals throughout the year.

In the heart of Deal, you’ll find an array of quirky shops and local flea markets like the Deal Saturday Market, where you can purchase fresh local produce, clothing, flowers, jewellery, and even toys. The town boasts a selection of independent shops selling vintage items including vinyl records, books, collectables, and carefully curated clothes and furniture.
One of the best photo opportunities in Deal is Middle Street, a narrow, winding street renowned for its colourful Georgian homes. Despite its beauty, Middle Street has a mysterious past, known as a hub for smugglers in the 17th and 18th centuries.
However, Deal is not just for explorers but also a haven for food lovers. The town boasts a produce market on Wednesdays and Fridays, alongside a variety of restaurants offering seafood, French cuisine, and traditional British fare.
Regardless of your plans, Deal, a hidden gem, is worth a visit for its stunning beach views, rich history, and unique shops.
