After over 40,000 public votes, the shortlist for Britain’s Favourite Market 2025 has been revealed. The excitement is building as 10 markets move forward to the next stage of the competition… one of which is in our very own county.
Chelmsford Indoor Market was one of ten markets listed as one of the best in the UK. This prestigious award, organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) as part of the Great British Market Awards, celebrates the very best of UK markets.
Chelmsford’s indoor market dates all the way back to the 11th century. It includes many family-run businesses, handed down through generations, and you can choose from a wide variety of products and enjoy a unique shopping experience here.

The High Street Market takes place in Chelmsford High Street every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. It has a huge range of stalls, famed for being a place where you could get almost everything, including a butchers, bakers, fruit and veg stalls, takeaways and florists, and is loved by shoppers in and around Chelmsford.
Thursday is vintage day, and the traders here are always delighted to show shoppers their collectable items for sale. This ranges from war memorabilia, vinyl records, vintage jewellery, and ornaments, to books and DVDs.
The indoor market allows you to support small, local, family-run businesses and help ensure that Chelmsford’s traditional market thrives well into the 21st century. Its nomination as one of the best in the UK undoubtedly means so much to both traders and visitors!
The next phase of the shortlist involves evaluation by a panel of industry experts, who will decide which market takes the coveted title of Britain’s Favourite Market 2025. The winner will be announced at the NABMA January Conference in Birmingham on 30 January 2025 , alongside other Great British Market Award winners.
