Teesside enjoys milder temperatures – but don’t pack away that winter coat just yet

After days of freezing conditions across Teesside, the cold snap has finally eased with temperatures expected to reach up to 11C today.

The milder weather is due to continue for the next few days, with plenty of sunshine around the region. However, forecasters at the Met Office are predicting a return of the chill, with temperatures expected to drop again on Saturday to as low as -2C.

Today’s forecast for the North East suggests it will stay near or above the average feel for this time of year with a “noticeable” southwesterly breeze. Tonight is expected to be mostly dry with clear spells and light winds and a minimum temperature of 5C.

From tomorrow until Saturday the temperatures are expected to slowly creep back down with fresh winds due to pick up on Thursday and Friday. By Saturday maximum temperatures of 3C are forecast during the day and as low as -2C throughout the night.

The swing in the weather this week comes after days of freezing conditions with Britons facing temperatures as low as -16C. Yellow warnings for snow and ice have dominated weather headlines with the icy snap causing disruption across the region.

The big thaw this week means river levels are expected to rise and flood alerts have been sounded for parts of North Yorkshire, including around the the River Swale and tributaries. A flood warning is in place for locations near the River Ure, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around the Boroughbridge Camping and Caravanning Site.

Heading into February, the long range forecast is predicting further varied conditions. The Met Office said: “A dominant flow from the Atlantic looks likely through this period, resulting in an unsettled, milder and windier than average period.

“This is likely to result in areas of rain and periods of stronger winds affecting most if not all parts of the UK at times, though with the wettest and windiest weather probably occurring towards the north and west. However, the potential for brief colder spells with associated frost, ice and snow remains, following any deep lows crossing the region.”
