Teen attacked with weapons at Smethwick shopping centre after disorder erupts

A 17-year-old boy was attacked by a group of armed men in a Black Country store, leaving him with serious injuries. The violence flared at a shopping centre in the region yesterday evening, January 2.

The group of men entered a store in West Cross Shopping Centre, in Smethwick, at around 8.10pm before the teenager was attacked. He sustained injuries to his head and body and taken to hospital, although his injuries were not believed to have been life threatening.

No arrests have been made so far however West Midlands Police is reviewing CCTV footage as part of its enquiries. Officers said they’d like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time.

A force spokesperson said: “We are appealing for information after a teenager was seriously injured following disorder in Smethwick yesterday evening. Officers were called at around 8.10pm to West Cross Shopping Centre, Oldbury Road after a group of men entered a store with weapons.

“A 17-year-old boy was repeatedly struck and suffered injuries to his head and body. The group then fled the scene. The boy was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.

“Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and as part of our enquiries we would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time. If you have any information about the incident please contact us via Live Chat on our website or call 101 quoting 20/101827/25.
