Sub-zero Glasgow ice warning ahead of snowy weekend for city with weather warning

A fresh weather warning for icy conditions has been issued for Glasgow as sub-zero temperatures are expected for the city tonight (January 2).

Warnings have also been issued for heavy snow this weekend in Glasgow, with up to 5cm of snow expected widely and as much as 20cm on high ground. This morning, Glaswegians find themselves under a Met Office yellow weather warning for ice, with a second warning coming into place at 5pm and lasting until 10am Friday.

Forecasters warn pavements, cycle paths and roads will become icy, especially inland, with some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces to be expected. Glasgow will be bitterly cold tonight, with a ‘feels like’ temperature of -4°C predicted by the Met Office, and actual lows of -1°C.

Friday will be slightly milder, with highs of 3°C. A yellow warning for snow has been issued by the Met Office from 12am Sunday (January 5) to midday Monday (January 6).

The warning, which covers Glasgow, the surrounding areas and much of the rest of Scotland, comes after heavy snow was forecast. There is a chance of disruption to road, rail and air travel, stranded vehicles, and rural communities being cut off, as well as power cuts.

Forecasters say ‘significant accumulations’ of snow are possible. In a statement, the Met Office said: “Whilst not all areas may be affected, outbreaks of snow will likely develop during Sunday and Sunday night, potentially giving some significant accumulations in places.

“The greatest risk is in southern and eastern Scotland, where 2-5 cm may accumulate in quite a few places and perhaps as much as 10-20 cm over high ground. Rain or sleet is more likely near some northern and eastern coasts.”
