Sub-zero blast in North Staffordshire causes ‘serious impact’ on bin collections

Council leaders say Arctic conditions in North Staffordshire have had a ‘serious impact’ on bin collections. And families in the Moorlands are being urged to leave their bins out as officials carry out daily assessments on the road conditions.

Now Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has confirmed that its brown bin collections have been suspended until the week commencing January 20 so crews can ‘focus on the backlog’. It comes as the area has been hard hit by the wintry conditions after heavy snow first moved in over the weekend.

Since then and there was further snow on Monday, Tuesday and an unexpected heavy blast yesterday morning. Meanwhile temperatures have nosedived in the Moorlands to leave it feeling like -8C in places earlier today.

The council has told residents who have not had their bins collected this week, including those with ‘blue tops’ in Endon, to leave them out. A spokesperson said: “The ongoing wintry weather continues to have a serious impact on waste and recycling collections across the district. Road conditions are being assessed daily and we have taken the decision to suspend brown bin collections until January 20 so crews can focus on the backlog.

“Crews are working hard to manage this situation whilst ensuring safety first for all operations and other users of the roads but the sub-zero temperatures forecast this week may mean it is some time before collections return to normal. Please leave your bins out and thank you for your patience during this challenging weather.”
