Staffordshire school shut today after weekend efforts fall just short

Pupils at one Staffordshire school will remain at home today after it was forced to stay shut. Leaders at Uttoxeter’s Loxley Hall School say the venue’s boilers broke late on Friday afternoon.

Despite efforts over the weekend to get them working – the boilers have not fired back to life. Today (January 13) and the school has been forced to remain closed as there is no hot water or heating.

The closure comes after a week which saw icy conditions and snow force primary and secondary schools across the county to shut. Heavy snowfall at the beginning of last week followed by sub-zero conditions resulted in leaders citing ‘dangerous’ conditions facing staff and pupils.

Yesterday saw temperatures creep a little to begin the big thaw. Meanwhile staff at Loxley Hall hope to ‘find a solution’ by the end of today.

A spokesperson said: “We have been working to get the school boilers functioning after they broke down last Friday afternoon. Staff have been working over the weekend to get them working, sadly without success. This means we cannot heat the school building or provide hot water, which does not conform to key guidance and relevant health and safety standards. We appreciate this is frustrating for parents, carers and pupils. We hope to be able to find a solution by the end of the day on January 13. Updates will be provided as soon as possible. Sincere apologies for any inconvenience.”
