Staff at Cottingham High School go on strike

Staff are involved in ongoing strikes at Cottingham High School over two issues.

Staff met outside Cottingham High School, forming picket lines twice this week, with plans for further action in the coming weeks. The National Education Union (NEU) have told the LDRS that the strikes pertain to two issues.

Firstly, there are fears amongst staff that the closure of the school’s sixth form may lead to redundancies. The NEU told the LDRS that that whilst two members of staff are facing redundancy, there are fears the number could rise into double figures.

A spokesperson for The Consortium Academy Trust, of which Cottingham High is a member, said: “Closure of Cottingham High School’s sixth form means two roles would be placed at risk of redundancy, but the consultation for those directly affected has not even begun yet’.

The second cause is related to a new framework in place at the school which has meant changes to how teachers plan their lessons. The new framework, the NEU claims, has workload implications for staff.

In response to the ongoing industrial action taking place, the school have issued the following statement: “Our first priority is to continue to provide our learners with the best education possible. We have done everything we can to minimise any impact on their education, and remain committed to engaging positively with the unions in order to find a mutually acceptable resolution to this dispute as soon as possible.”
