Sports star’s fiancé found dead in river as club shares touching tribute

A woman whose body was recovered from the River Moy in County Mayo has been identified locally as 28-year-old Róisín Cryan, according to Gardai.

She was the fiancé of 27-year-old Mayo senior footballer Conor Loftus, who plays for Crossmolina side Deel Rovers and famously scored a goal in the 2017 All-Ireland football final.

Tributes have poured in for the young woman. Among them were the local GAA club Shannon Gaels. They said: “On behalf of the entire Shannon Gaels GAA community, we extend our deepest condolences to the Cryan family and loved ones of Róisín.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time. May you find strength and comfort in each other, and know that we stand with you in your grief.”

Locals have also paid tribute, according to the Irish Mirror. One said: ‘’Heartfelt sympathy to Joe, Marguerite and Roisin’s sisters and to the extended Cryan and Loftus families on your great loss.

“Maeve and Roisin were always in and out of our house when they were children, playing with the dog and chatting to my parents, Eamonn and Bridie.

“With my sympathy and fond regards. Take good care of yourselves and of each other.”

Another said: “I met Roisin during what turned out to be the best summer of our lives, living together in San Francisco. From the moment we met, it was clear she had a special kind of energy – gentle, kind, and full of life.

“We were always up to some kind of mischief together, creating memories I’ll carry with me forever. Roisin was one of the most gentle and kind-hearted people I’ve ever known, and I feel truly lucky to have shared that unforgettable summer with her.

“Sending condolences to her family and friends during this time. May beautiful Roisin rest in peace.”

Rosin is survived by her parents Joe and Marguerite, fiancé Conor, sisters Annmarie, Clare, Ruth and Maeve. Her burial will be held on Wednesday at 11am, with the family announcing that the house is strictly private. Donations can be made to Grainne Uaille and River Moy Search and Rescue.
