Snowstorm joining ‘significant second weather event’ near Ireland as Met Eireann updates warnings

A second significant weather event has been forecast by experts ahead of the weekend as the snowstorm deepens across the UK and Ireland over the next few days.

Met Eireann have issued an update on their warnings over the latest snow forecast as temperatures are set to plunge over the weekend with snow, ice and frost on the cards.

It comes as a warning over snow to ice is forecast by weather experts off Ireland in parts pf England, with a possible flood risk.

The ‘significant’ event is likely to see 5-10cm of snow before quickly melting across the northern and midlands areas of England.

MetWatchUK issued the update on Friday which read: “A significant UK snow event this Sunday is likely as a low pressure system moves into the cold air over the UK.

“A snow to rain event likely for the Midlands, 5-10cm before quickly melting (flood risk).

“Northern England may see the highest totals of over 30cm in higher towns.”

It comes as a status red snow warning was issued by a leading Irish forecaster with up to 12 inches in parts of the country.

Met Eireann have issued the latest forecast for Saturday, meanwhile, which is as follows: “A cold and frosty start on Saturday with fog patches in the north. Hazy sunshine for a time but cloud will build from the south. Rain and sleet will arrive in southern coastal areas by late morning.”

After reviewing the most up to date data, Ireland’s Weather Channel has issued a Status Red weather warning for inland Munster, the Midlands and parts of Wicklow, with a Status Orange Snowfall warning through the Midwest, parts of Leinster and other inland areas of Munster.

A deepening low-pressure front will move over the country from the south on Saturday afternoon and through the majority of the weekend.

As a result, Cathal Nolan from Ireland’s Weather Channel said: “significant and disruptive snowfall totals” are likely.

Areas in the Red warning zone could see as much as 12 inches of snow while areas under the orange warning could see as much as six inches of snow.
