Temperatures near Ireland are set to fall to a bonechilling -20 degrees on Thursday night, while the country braces for multiple concurrent weather warnings.
The snow and ice is still here for a couple of days at least. Every county in the country will be under either a Status Orange / Yellow Low Temperature and Ice warning until Friday at the earliest.
A Status Orange warning for extremely cold conditions with widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow will remain in effect until 11am on Thursday.
Met Eireann has said to expect dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays and animal welfare issues.
When the Orange warning lifts, a Status Yellow Low Temperature and Ice warning will be in effect until 12pm on Friday.
Ireland’s neighbours across the sea will face even worse conditions however, according to Scottish Highland, Islands, Moray and Aberdeenshire Weather on Facebook.
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen -20 used on the TV forecast, but it’s highly possible in sheltered glens. It certainly looks very cold Thursday and Friday night, I’ve been saying this for a while now. Lag them pipes and make sure your outside water supplies are turned off and taps left open”.
One weather expert wrote that we are seeing a “very strong polar vortex with very probable tropospheric coupling”.

The polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. It weakens in summer and strengthens in winter.
Many times during winter in the northern hemisphere, the polar vortex will expand, sending cold air southward with the jet stream This occurs fairly regularly during wintertime and is often associated with large outbreaks of Arctic air.
One leading weather expert has also warned of an “Anticyclonic wave breaking (AWB) over Western Europe.” This means that much more milder weather is coming to these shores as we move into next week.
