Snow ploughs are working around the clock to keep North Staffordshire’s roads clear ahead of the ‘big thaw’. Heavy snow hit the north of the county with high routes in the Moorlands around Flash among the worst affected.
Gritting teams were out through the night and into today to treat roads like the busy A53 between Leek and Buxton as snow continues to fall. Now residents are being urged to be vigilant and to drive to the conditions.
The plea comes as 18 flood warnings and 21 flood alerts remain in place across Staffordshire with areas close to the rivers Trent, Dove, Anker and Tame at risk. Rural roads have been affected where there is water run-off from fields as the snow melts.
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways said: “While most of the county had light snow showers last night, it was heavier in the north and our snow ploughs were in action again, with gritting teams out across Staffordshire’s road network.
“We’re now asking people to check local flood alerts for their area and be aware that there will be surface water on some roads, particularly in rural areas. With sub-zero nighttime temperatures forecast this week, our gritters will be out countywide, though we’d again remind people to drive with extra care.”
