A weather warning has been issued near Ireland ahead of heavy snowfall across large areas as an Orange alert has not yet been ruled out.
The UK’s Met Office issued the warning to Scotland, England and Wales for the snowstorm set to arrive this coming weekend, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 January 2025.
They warned in an update issued on Wednesday 1 January: £Yellow weather warning issued: A risk of snow across parts of Scotland, England and Wales. Saturday 1200 – Monday 0900″
They also warned of high winds to go with the snow and ice in Scotland, and warned of low temperatures creating treacherous conditions across Northern Ireland.
Meanwhile, Met Éireann has yet to issue a warning for the Republic, however, they have forecast temperatures as low as -4C while other experts say that models show -7.2C is possible in the coming days.
Rain, sleet and/or snow are expected from late on Friday 3 January 2025 and until as far as Monday.
Respected atmospheric science communicator, Carlow Weather, shared his view of the weekend, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 January 2025, showing charts indicating a sharp freeze.
While temperatures in Co Galway topped 12C on Tuesday, New Year’s Eve, the mercury may dip as low as -7C, and with it there is the chance of snow and sleet. And, temperatures are forecast to drop as low as -4C and a severe cold snap will make its presence felt as early as today, 1 January , across Ireland.
Alan O’Reilly, the man behind Carlow Weather, explained the weekend’s conditions: “Latest charts for next Sunday show low system coming up and meeting cold air with a mix of rain, sleet and snow before pulling away again. Other models keep this further south and keep us colder but dryer. A very messy one to forecast but these lows generally trend further South.”
