Smallthorne bank turned into masterpiece in artist’s January challenge

Talented artist Rob Pointon has turned Smallthorne bank into a masterpiece as part of a month-long challenge. The renowned North Staffordshire painter has set himself a challenge of producing a piece of art every day in January.

Today (January 14) he set up his easel on Ford Green Road, opposite Saturn Road, where he captured the well-known bank. So far he’s been in locations such as Alsager, Burslem, Middleport Pottery, Longport, and Rode Heath – where he’s currently living.

The wintry conditions haven’t put the former Blythe Bridge High School pupil off either and he has donned snow boots and gloves to make sure he keeps up with the challenge. Tuesday morning saw him on the busy Ford Green Road capturing a row of terrace houses on the steep hill.

Speaking to StokeonTrentLive at the scene, he said: “You just go with what inspires you in terms of picking locations. Today I wanted to capture the steepness of the hill. It’s not a stretch that’s been painted very often but visually it’s fascinating to see the houses stacked up.”

The Draycott-in-the-Moors-born artist has also been chatting to locals curious to see why he has set up.

He added: “The paintings are just for me really, it’s a personal challenge and gives me focus for the month. I am trying to capture the general atmosphere.”
