Six-week A6 roadworks: Disruption due to Severn Trent sewage works

Six-week roadworks on a busy stretch of Derbyshire road are set to cause disruption for motorists while Severn Trent responds to an “unpleasant” sewage issue. Two-way traffic lights are in place on the B6012 Chatsworth Road, in Rowsley, to allow the replacement of a long stretch of sewer pipe that runs parallel to the route – with three-way traffic lights set to be in place as the work moves south towards the A6 Dale Road North.

Severn Trent deployed a team on Monday (January 13) to replace the 180-metre stretch of pipe, with the traffic management measures in place to ensure workers can carry out the project safely. The works are scheduled to take six weeks, with a target to be completed by the end of February.

Christina Massey, Severn Trent community communications officer for Derbyshire, said: “As the pipes that make up our networks age, they can start to become more susceptible to problems like bursts. We’ve had a few reports of issues on the pressurised sewer in Rowsley, which can be really unpleasant, so our team will be working in the area for six weeks to replace a section of the main.

“This will ensure that the local waste network is more resilient and ready to meet the challenges of climate change and population growth both now and into the future.”

Starting on Chatsworth Road just outside Peak Shopping Village, the works will be completed in sections, moving south to Dale Road North.

Two-way traffic lights will be in place for the majority of the works, with three-way lights for the junction with the A6.

Ms Massey continued: “We know that temporary traffic lights can be disruptive but they’re necessary to help keep everyone safe while we deliver these works. We’d like to thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding while we complete this upgrade”.

The A6 is a busy route that runs from Carlisle to Luton, passing through Derbyshire towns such as Bakewell, Matlock, Belper and – eventually – Derby. It joins Chatsworth Road at Rowsley and offers a shortcut to motorists heading north to Baslow and North East Derbyshire – even passing through the Chatsworth Estate itself at one point.
