The Shields Ferry evening services are now set to resume after a previous challenge around crew availability.
Nexus has decided to resume the river crossings between North Shields and South Shields from Monday, January 20, after the unexpected issues began in November.
Back in November, Nexus managing director Cathy Massarella told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that transport chiefs had “explored every alternative” to keep the night-time ferry crossings, adding: “We have been hit by an unprecedented and extremely unexpected series of long-term sickness.
“It is a small team. Funding-wise we cannot afford to block in too much contingency and can’t bring in lots of additional staff. Reducing the service was the most robust and guaranteed solution to allow commuters to get across the Tyne at peak times.”
Now, the ferry timetable will return to normal after the temporary changes were made at the end of last year. With the issue having now been resolved, a spokesperson for Nexus added: “We are grateful to customers for their patience while this period of disruption was in place.”
Shields Ferry evening crossings run from Monday to Saturday, operating through to 8pm from Monday to Wednesday, and from Thursday to Saturday until 10.40pm. Ferry services on Sundays are unchanged and will continue to run from 10.15am to 6pm.
