Those dumping their rubbish in the Shankill community have been urged to “take some pride in the area” and stop “this disgusting act”. According to a post on ‘Community First’ the issue is attracting rats which “have been spotted running around this illegal dumping”.
Folks leaving their rubbish in public spaces are being asked to “take your rubbish to the dump like everyone else”.
The Facebook post, which attracted dozens of comments, highlights what appears to be an ongoing issue that’s increasingly frustrating those living there. One man said: “The main road is covered in rubbish… tins, bottles, wrappers, sweets. Side streets are a mess… everywhere is a mess.”
The anonymous post on Community First says: “As if the Shankill doesn’t already have a challenging reputation. Come on, people, take some pride in the area where you live. If it’s not dog mess, it’s something else.
“This is disgusting; now rats have been spotted running around this illegal dumping. It’s a recurring issue every week. Stop living as if you’re in a third-world country and take your rubbish to the dump like everyone else. Judging by the names, it seems everyone has access to cars.
“Come on, residents of Canmore/Northland Street and parts of Crossland Court, I’d like to think you’re better than this, but clearly, that’s not the case.”
It’s understood the Oldpark area is suffering similar issues.
A Belfast City Council spokesperson said: “Fly-tipping is a serious offence and can result in a fine of £2,500.
“Belfast City Council urges all residents to dispose of waste responsibly at this time of year. Cardboard can be easily recycled by flattening and placing in blue bins or kerbside recycling boxes, while large amounts can also be taken to any of our household recycling centres.
“Additional bags of household waste can also be disposed of at recycling centres if your bin is full. Residents can also arrange for a free bulky waste collection via our website to help remove larger items, including furniture. Further info on how to manage waste and recycling over Christmas is available on our website – belfastcity.gov.uk/recycling”
They told us this particular dumping has been reported to their area team for removal and for them to look into further.
They added: “Our recycling centres are open all this week for visiting (closed Wednesday only – New Year’s Day) and our direct web address for booking free bulky waste collections is https://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/bins/bulky-waste
