Seven Scottish places hit with new 36-hour snow warning as Met Office says 15cm could fall

Scotland is set to be blasted by more snow as the Met Office issues a new 36-hour snow alert and warns as much as 15 cm could fall in places. Arctic conditions have been the norm since last week with snow and ice causing issues for schools and on the transport network.

A yellow warning for snow and ice has been extended for western and northern areas until Thursday night, January 9. And while there are no other warnings in the forecast, the Met Office has not ruled out issuing more before the week is out.

Temperatures of -10C are still possible in parts of Scotland on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night and -9C is predicted on Saturday into Sunday. Weather experts have warned Scots living in seven local authorities to be vigilant throughout the alert.

The Met Office singled out Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Western Isles, Orkney, Shetland and Highland as part of the warning. Experts said that areas above 150 metres could see as much as 10 to 15 cm of snow, while areas in lower areas could see as much as 7cm.

Forecasters warned that the weather could cause further transport chaos as it called on Scots to be careful and plan ahead. It said that rail and bus services could be impacted by the weather and cause delays on roads.

They said: “Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls. If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.
