Serious snow scenes show Irish areas most covered as Met Eireann update forecast

Snowfall has caused widespread disruption to travel and has caused mass power outages across large areas of the country,

After 12 hours of snow, over eight inches (20cm) of snow is covering areas of Co Clare, Co Limerick, Co Kerry and Co Cork with heavy snow reported in many other counties.

Tens of thousands of homes were without power on Sunday morning 5 January as crews worked tirelessly to restore service in bitter conditions.

Heavy snowfall blanketed large parts of Ireland overnight as a freezing cell of air reached the country around 5pm on Saturday 4 January. Temperatures are expected to drive below freezing again today or this evening Sunday 5 January, with rain expected to fall this evening and black ice expected to from when this freezes over.

A much anticipated night of music and craic in the name of a good cause has been cancelled as roads and businesses close ahead of the coming snowstorm.

The event is the second cancellation called well before the storm is due to arrive on Saturday evening. Sparkly Shine & Bubbly Wine event was due to open this evening Saturday 4 January 2025 at the popular Eddie Ned’s of Monivea.

On Sunday morning 5 January, a transatlantic flight from Cancun in Mexico to Manchester in England was diverted into Shannon Airport. The plane landed safely at Shannon at around 8:41am.

Less than two hours later, another flight, this time a domestic Dublin-to-Kerry journey was forced to divert to Shannon Airport. The flight landed at around 10:37am on Sunday morning 5 January.

Shannon Airport reported the two incidents as well as an update on travel in and out of the facility: “FR 611 routing from Dublin to Kerry Airport diverted to Shannon and landed safely at 10:37am. Earlier this morning, a Norse Atlantic flight (UBT5876) routing Cancun to Manchester diverted to Shannon Airport. The aircraft, a Boeing 789, landed safely at 08:41am.
