Serious Met Eireann warning update as ’15 inch snowstorm worst in years’ hits off Ireland

Met Eireann have issued a forecast update as a ’15 inch snowstorm’ is set to hit off Ireland this week.

As Ireland braces for a frosty week ahead, a deluge of snow has been forecast with temperatures plunging to below zero.

Met Eireann issued a yellow weather warning for ice ahead of the cold snap from Thursday evening at 6pm with -3C temperatures expected in many areas.

The warning is in place until 11am on Friday. Met Eireann issued the warning on Thursday morning ahead of the temperature plunge saying: “Status Yellow – Low Temperature/Ice warning for Ireland. Met Éireann Weather Warning: Very cold with widespread frost and ice as temperatures fall to -3 degrees or below in many areas.”

It comes as snow is predicted off Ireland in parts of the UK this week, with experts predicting a possibility of more than 20cm of snow.

Meteorology expert Matt Wolves said of the latest forecast: “Snow snow snow!! The Midlands further North could be in the firing line late Saturday and more so into Sunday further North. I wouldn’t be surprised to see higher parts getting 20+cm of snow as well with perhaps milder air getting into the South through Sunday.

“The cold air could begin to track back south again form Monday so this is one to watch as well. ECM day 5 and colder air lurks with intent so I’ll be looking for Southward adjustments over the next couple of days.

“This type of weather pattern could be around through January as I’m not currently seeing any strong signal for any one pattern to dominate. The risk of colder airmasses and Atlantic frontal systems bumping into it bringing snow will remain I feel.

“But be prepared for snow this weekend and be prepared for changes and quite a lot of snow for some!”
