A number of Huddersfield businesses went bust in 2024, with the cost of living crisis playing a part in their demise.
The Gazette publishes hundreds of insolvency notices including many from the Huddersfield area.
Among is longstanding Huddersfield bakery company Hadfields which ran into trouble earlier this year and closed, leaving shop workers and bakery staff without jobs.
In December liquidators were appointed for The Bakery People Limited – Hadfields was its trading name – as part of the insolvency process. The business was based at Beck View Business Park, Bradley, Huddersfield.
Huddersfield area firms that became insolvent in 2024
Lords Brewing Company Limited
The beer maker – with the trading name Lords Brewing Co – was based at Heath House Mill, Golcar, Huddersfield.
Liquidators Leonard Curtis, based in Park Row, Leeds, were appointed in October when the company ceased trading. Some of their lager and cask ales can still be found as guest ales at local pubs who snapped up the final batches.
T&Cake
T&Cake in Almondbury is pictured in 2020.
T&Cake was a cafe in Northgate, Almondbury, that ceased trading earlier this year. A new business, a coffee bar called Sôlt, has since opened in its place.
SterlingKing
Sterlingking Limited was a Huddersfield-based law firm that was owned and directed by Jasbinder Singh Sohal. Sohal was struck off earlier this year for making ‘improper payments’ from the firm’s client bank account. The liquidation process began in 2020, with documents relating to the liquidation process issued this month to the Registrar of Companies.
Chicken Site Limited
This takeaway, which traded as Grillish, could be found in Cross Church Street in the centre of Huddersfield. Liquidators were appointed in March this year.
Ben Beardsall Limited
Ben Beardsell Limited, which traded under the name Direct Electrical, is listed as a wholesale seller of radio, TV goods and electrical household appliances. According to The Gazette, liquidators were appointed in October.
Krispo’s Limited
This takeaway food shop saw the appointment of liquidators in March, with the notice of their appointment posted in April. The takeaway was in Cross Church Street in Huddersfield town centre.
Matildas Tea House Ltd
Matlidas Kitchen and Teahouse, Lepton
Matlidas Kitchen and Teahouse could be found at 291 Wakefield Road, Lepton. It ceased trading back in August, leaving customers feeling sad. Liquidators had been appointed that same month.
Back in July, the cafe announced its decision to close which it blamed on the rising cost of utilities, rent and stock.
In a post on social media, they said: “Unfortunately we have been forced to make the decision to close our lovely cafe permanently, due to the rising costs of utilities, rent and stock. Despite all our best efforts we cannot continue anymore.”
Pennine Demolitions Ltd
Liquidators were appointed in November for this demolition company. The main trading address was listed as Woodlands Mill, Dale Street, Golcar.
T&M Enterprises (Huddersfield) Limited
The previous name of this company was Chickano’s. The business was listed as a restaurant based in Union Street, Huddersfield. Liquidators were appointed in October.
Hall Eateries Limited
StackShack
The trading name was StackShack, a fast food/burger takeaway in Lane Head Lane, Kirkburton.
In August, the owner closed after a ‘wild and wonderful’ journey. In an online post, they said: “It’s been a wild and wonderful journey, but we feel that with the cost of living crisis, the battle just isn’t worth it anymore.
“Some of the products we buy have quadrupled in price since opening. It doesn’t feel right to just keep putting the prices up and up.”
The owner thanked customers and staff for their support.
